Welcome to this week’s edition of "Just a few things," a weekly blog dedicated to sharing a few things I've been doing, thinking, reading or learning throughout the previous week. Many of these things will be inspired by my interactions with you via email or social media... so feel free to drop a comment and share a few things yourself! Let’s get to it...
Except this week is a little different. A few of you weighed in with questions on Facebook and Instagram earlier in the week to keep things fresh. Now, let's get to it!
What am I reading?
Last week I mentioned I was reading All the Light We Cannot See. The book is set against World War 2 and follows two primary characters through the war, one a French girl and the other a German boy turned soldier.
I'm happy (and sad) to report back I finished the book this morning. The writing was captivating and the characters feel like old friends at this point. If you're in the market for something new to read, give this one a look.
Check it out on GoodReads.
Next up: Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick.
What’s ONE thing I’m working to improve on?
Lightening up. I get bogged down in the day/day tasks and need to remember to have some fun and enjoy the process.
From Kristen C. on Facebook: How would you feel if your son wants to join the military?
Kristen comes out swinging, eh? This is a question I've thought about a million times since my little guy was born and the answer is never the same. Ultimately, it will be his decision and one I would be proud of. I now understand, though, what my mom said all those years I was in the Army and how she felt when I left on deployment.
There's a potential blog post in this somewhere... something worth exploring. Thank you, Kristen!
From Jonathan F. on Facebook: I want to know how you would handle my situation I am in, if you were in my shoes.. I was a truck driver and in the guard after active duty, lost my 1st wife when she passed in July, I turned into a stay at home dad and trying to carry on, then on Halloween I lost my mother which that was unexpected.. how would you of handled it.
Firstly, I am so, so sorry to hear about your wife and mother, Jonathan. I honestly have no answer for this as I don't know what I would do if I were in your shoes. As a father, getting off the road to be with your child was a great move. That's time you can't replace. Since I don't have a good answer, remember that we have a good community of civilians and military who are always willing to lend a helping hand. And I would definitely recommend reaching out to a counselor simply to talk through everything that has happened, what you've experienced since these events and how you're doing. It's unbelievable what talking with someone can do.
From doxiemama5678 on Instagram: Do you have shirts coming out this year? What are the big plans for other fundraisers or Cool ideas for the holidays like the ornaments you did for this past Christmas.
Yes, shirts are in the works right now! To be more specific, 3/4 sleeve raglans are in the works right now. With it still cold out, I thought these would be a happy medium between the hoodies and T's before spring. I also have some VERY cool hats in production.
Oh, do I have ideas for fundraisers and new products! I'm working with a few well known veterans to produce Original Combat Flags using their gear. These will be available as a "unique" item through Combat Flags and the 50% donation will be made to a nonprofit of their choosing. And ornaments will be back!
What’s one thing that YOU’RE proud of for the week?
