Nov. 5, 2021 | Just a Few Things

Welcome to this week's edition of Just a Few Things, where I share just a few things from that week that have inspired, motivated, interested or (insert whatever adjective you'd like here) me during that week.

Why do these? Because we often find inspiration in the most unexpected of places. Maybe you'll see something in this week's edition that will spur you to action or maybe you'll be moved to share a thing or two from your week with me!

And if you're thinking... what does this have to do with flags? Well, it has absolutely nothing to do with flags. Combat Flags has always been about more than flags - it's about community, sharing ideas and constant improvement. Unusual, right?

A challenge to you: Choose 1 of the things below and leave your reply in a comment. You never know who you can inspire!

Let's get to it:

Burning the candle at both ends?
Does it seem impossible or, *gasp* unacceptable, to find leisure throughout the day? For me it wasn't a priority, until it needed to be. After some soul-searching last month I came to the conclusion that I need more balance in my life, specifically with rest/relaxation/leisure. Being a book nerd, I turned to the internet and found a book called “Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing and Underdelivering.”

All I can is this: LIFE CHANGER

The author layers in an incredible amount of history to explain how we got to where we are in America with overworking, and then blows it away with scientific research to illustrate how, basically, we need a break. Most importantly, she gives tips/tricks/best practices to follow to begin to improve.

A new initiative from the White House
The White House rolled out a new strategy to combat the veteran suicide epidemic this week. The strategy, in short, emphasize firearm safety, aims to limit barriers to mental health care, reduce housing and food insecurity, increase research and improve emergency room crisis care.

You can see the full strategy and a short write up in the Stars and Stripes here.

Ryan Hendrickson: Green Beret and Author
You may remember (or may not) that back in September I shared a book I was reading – Tip of the Spear The Incredible Story of an Injured Green Beret's Return to Battle. Well, this week I had Ryan on the podcast to learn more about his story. Long story short, our talk was so good I had to break it into 2 parts. The first part will post in a few weeks, with the second posting the week after.

If you want to get ahead of the curve, you can find Ryan’s book here.

Alright, that's it for this week's edition of Just a Few Things. I hope you've been inspired to try something new, read a book, reflect on your week or listen to a new podcast. Please feel free to drop a comment or email with a thing or two from your week than I can share with others!
