Welcome to this week’s edition of "Just a few things," a weekly blog dedicated to sharing a few things I've been doing, thinking, reading or learning throughout the previous week. Many of these things will be inspired by my interactions with you via email or social media... so feel free to drop a comment and share a few things yourself! Let’s get to it:

What’s something cool I’ve been part of recently?
Simple! My friend Jason introduced me to Alec, the host of the First Class Fatherhood Podcast. This man has interviewed some INCREDIBLE people - I’m talking world famous.... people like Marcus Luttrell and Tom Brady. How I got on the show is beyond me, but I’m thankful for the opportunity to talk about how much I love being a dad, lessons learned so far and Combat Flags. You can check it out on iTunes and Stitcher.

What am I reading?
I FINALLY have an update for you here. I started “All the Light We Cannot See” night before last and am really enjoying it so far. The narrative itself is award winning, but the way the author meticulously stitches words and phrases together is beautiful. I can feel the words melting into me as I read them.

The book is a Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Check it out on GoodReads.

What’s ONE thing I’m working to improve on?
Is it cliche to say positivity? It’s not that I’m negative, but I tend to look at things how they are and react to them in a very matter of fact way. I observe people at work (I work a full time corporate gig for those of you who don’t know) and I admire the way they put a positive spin and maintain a high level of professionalism regardless of the situation. I can do this to a point, but I have a hard time not stating the obvious or calling the obvious out when it needs to be said (or when I think it needs to be said).

What am I looking forward to next week?
Finally finishing up the tear down of these uniforms. It’s been a grind for sure. And I’m SO looking forward to catching up on some design work for Combat Flags. I’ve been out of Illustrator for far too long with my attention being elsewhere.

And lastly, here’s ONE quote I want to leave you with this week:
“The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.”
Charles Dickens

What’s one thing that YOU’RE proud of for the week?
Enough about me this week :) I want to hear from you. Leave a comment with one thing that you’re proud of from the week. Share your success with me, please!

That’s it for this week’s Just a Few Things. Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. Like I mentioned earlier, feel free to drop a comment with a few things you’ve been up to!

I’ve also got lots of cool stuff up in the store. If you haven’t checked it out in a while, swing by and check out some freedom 🇺🇸

Hi

I served for 26 years, however this week I am proud and thankful for those that serve now. With all that is happening these days we should be thankful to those that guard and protect. Thanks to them and Bless our troops.

The bad news is that a few of my established partners have had to close down their production, which means I can’t place new orders for products like the 3x5 foot camo flags. I’m nearly out of the Army/Air Force and Marine Corps flags, and once they’re gone I’m not sure how long it will take to get things back up and running. Another example is that of the Combat Patch. I’ve been working on a slight redesign of the patch and was so EXCITED to have found a local veteran-owned embroidery shop and we had JUST finalized the new patch when NC put in place a mandatory stay at home order.

It's funny... last week I was burning through books and this week I have slowed WAY down. I plan to startOn Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman today and have two more in queue. I'm increasingly interested in this topic and how it connects to the difficulty in transitioning from the military to civilian life.

Just a friendly reminder to remember to keep in contact with your buddies during these uncertain times. Whether it be isolation or anxiety due to the news, make sure they know they aren’t alone. Be a beacon of hope and courage and set the example for those around you. I feel the need to caveat this with the fact that I am not a medical or mental health professional, but isolation can often times exacerbate underlying anxiety or feelings of depression and separation. Give them a call, a text, FaceTime, or Facebook video chat. I don’t really care, just check in and be a good friend and human.
