July 14, 2023 | Just a Few Things

Welcome to this week's edition of Just a Few Things, where I share just a few things from the week that have inspired, motivated, interested or made me stop and think.

Why does Just a Few Things matter? Because we often find inspiration in the most unexpected of places. Maybe you'll see something in this week's edition that spurs you to action, inspires you to read something new or maybe you'll be moved to share a thing or two from your week with us!

And if you're thinking “wait, what does this have to do with flags?” Well, it has absolutely nothing to do with flags. Combat Flags has always been about more than flags - it's about community, sharing ideas and constant improvement. Let’s get to it.

A worthwhile listen: The Broken Record Podcast
If you're a lover of music, then I strongly recommend you give this podcast a listen. Most of the episodes are hosted by Rick Rubin as he interviews some of the biggest names in music of all time. The conversations are about their music, but also about how they (the musicians) found they're way to success, navigated difficult times or pushed the boundaries of the norm. A few of my favorite episodes are with Giles Martin (part 1), Giles Martin (part 2), the Black Keys and the Raconteurs.

An Interesting Read: A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead
You may or may not remember this, but in 2021 I embarked on a journey to read 1 book a week for the entire year. While I achieved that goal, my reading slowed considerably the last half of 2022 and into 2023. That being said, I'm currently reading " A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead" by Dennis McNally, which details the long history of the Dead. Admittedly, it's a bit slow in places, but if you're into biographies this is a must add to your reading list.

An Unexpected Surprise: Exploring Music with Vinyl
A few years ago I purchased a turntable and speakers on Black Friday, looking to create a family-friendly experience to listen to music, basically moving music from something that's on in the background to something we can all experience together. Well, fast forward a few years, and my little guy is now 5 (he was 3 at the time of the purchase) and just this week he's started actively choosing select records to play - He's leaning heavily into the Arcs right now as well as CCR (no complaints here). It's fun to watch him find his own taste while also exercising his ability to choose by picking the record, spinning up the turntable and flipping the record from side to side.

Alright, that's it for this week's edition of Just a Few Things. I hope you've been inspired to try something new, read a book, reflect on your week or listen to a new podcast.

Please feel free to drop a comment or email with a thing or two from your week that I can share with others!

Have a good one!

-Dan

Hey Dan,

So glad that you and Combat Flags are back! Love the weekly insights and thoughts.

The Coast Guard/Navy flag I purchased flies proudly in front of my house, and as a Battalion member of Stop Soldier Suicide, I am thrilled to see that you are continuing your work with them. :)

Wishing you continued success,
Renee
